"Max! You are the sheriff. How about making me your deputy?" I must have heard that line a million times as I killed “Mike the Cowboy” over and over just to see all the ways I could come up with to slow-mo kill someone. That was a highlight of my young life when Max Payne 2 came out and I was introduced to its wonderful brand of leather-jacket-flapping bullet-time acrobatics. God I played that demo so many times just for its wonderful gunplay. And lo and behold when my 12 year old self finally scrounged up the cash to pick up my own box copy (sadly not one of the box PC games I still own) there was a lot more to love. A whole tragic noir story, Max the ultimate self-hating Cool Antihero, and the music. That fucking cello. When that thing comes in with its deep, dulcet tones you know some shit is gonna get Sad. And as a twelve year old actively listening to Cursive, Sad was Good.

Coming back twenty-plus years later as a man now only five years Max Payne’s junior, not much has changed in my love for Max Payne 2. I still love the in-universe lore with all the fake TV commercials and TV shows like Address Unknown. I still love reloading the same shootout over and over to get the perfect run of headshots with no damage. The scoped MP5 is still a blessed gun-creation that feels almost unfair to easily zoom-in-headshot hordes of goons with.

Sure some things don’t hit as hard like the final turn of the story and the final boss fight. Or seeing Mona Sax nude in the shower (absolute banger as a twelve year old, let me tell you).

But other things hit harder. The writing for starters. Sam Lake really hits his groove here and delivers some legitimately poignant moments. I appreciate the style that oozes from the whole thing. The Address Unknown themed funhouse is a brilliant bit of weird world building rendered into a playable level. Ah and the comedy. From the one liners of the goons schmoozing before you round the corner and blast 'em away to, my favorite, the recording of Max Payne calling a phone sex line and then proceeding to deliver his normal sad sack monologue to a sex worker who’s like “Uh did you say you killed someone?!” Incredible.

Some games you drift away from as you get older and some stick with you forever more. Cheers to you, Max Payne. Now for my 38th birthday party I just need to find a leather jacket like Max’s and a lot of painkillers…
