Review

Wow what a phenomenal game.

So I played this game when it came out back in 2007. I honestly probably only got like 4 hours into the game. Maybe 1 or 2 zones in when you start getting different plasmids. And I bailed because I remember having choice paralysis on what plasmids to buy. And then whether I should hunt down all the Little Sisters.

Well, fast forward 13 years and I've finally gone through and finished it.

First of all, the atmosphere and characters, all told directly as well through the little audio recordings is very cool. Rapture is a super cool idea. Andrew Ryan is a fantastic character. The fact that he has you kill him to basically prove a point that you have no free will and that he does is insane and incredibly cool. The twist with Atlas was pretty well telegraphed but kind of cool. He was ultimately a weaker character than Atlas so that was kind of lame. I really liked the Good ending that's unlocked by sparing all the Little Sisters. The fact that your character who was basically raised in a test tube finally finds a family by saving all the little girls is so cute.

The transformation to you becoming a Big Daddy is also super cool. The fact that this dude basically alters himself to save the girls and kill Atlas is awesome.

Gameplay-wise is was still super fun even 13 years later. All the guns are pretty well powerful and the way you're constantly bouncing around scrounging for ammo and picking stuff up off enemies is cool. It is basically an RPG shooter without the inventory. Which I honestly thought was fantastic game design. Nevermind things like taking pictures of enemies to research them and gain bonuses against them. Plasmids were actually kind of boring for me. I basically just used them to add a little DPS or to stunlock stuff.

As a whole it didn't overstay its welcome except a couple times. As a result of all this I think it's an easy 9 for me. Might be up there for a 10.

Excited to dive into the sequels!
