Dishonored
Review
Replayed September 2020.
Wow after replaying it 8 years later I have to say, what an incredible game. It's really a pretty much perfect game. The stealth is great. And really stealth games are all about level design and the level design is superb. It reminds me of Deus Ex at its best. It's the perfect length of game where they could really just make sure every level is fantastic. Each one is a puzzle for you to figure out and there's a bunch of different ways to solve each level to make it continual fun.
I honestly recall being super frustrated by this game when I first played it. And now I'm wondering if that's just cause I was bad. I mean, to be fair, I save-scummed like a mofo to get perfect run throughs but I honestly enjoyed it.
It may have been when I played it in 2012 I really wanted to just murder everyone and the game punishes you for that. This time around I had no delusions about murder being anything more than the worst play through.
Anyway, yeah level design is dope. But in addition the story and the lore is so cool. I read almost every book I came across. They did such a good job buildig a cohesive world. Another really cool thing is the way that there are a handful of side characters that are continually referenced in the literature and dialogue. And those characters eventually start showing up. Apparently the DLC is basically a requirement to play before Dishonored 2 because they paint out the lore even further. SWOON.
And the last thing I'll say is the voice acting was tremendous. (Just googled this after finishing Death of the Outsider and holy SHIT this game has an outstanding cast. Carrie Fisher was apparently some random voice. It had the dude with the white hair from Mad Men as the Admiral. Michael Madsen as Daud. Susan Sarandon as Granny Rags WHICH I KNEW BUT COULDNT BELIEVE.
I'm giving this a 9 but it might just be a 10.
