If you played the wonderful Case of the Golden Idol and wanted more and better[1], Rise of the Golden Idol is more and better. The shift to the 70s adds a whole host of new colors for the creator's to paint their weird ugly people getting up to weird occult shit. Mechanically levels are broken down into sub problems this time around which makes them flow better and feel less "you get it or you don't." Toss in a greater variety of levels and some quality of life improvements and if you enjoyed the first Golden Idol you'll be a happy camper indeed.

All that being said, the devs pushed a patch that broke the game on the Mac my partner and I were using to play via Airplay on the TV together. We weren't able to play for 2 months. In a game where one mystery builds up the foundation for the next it utterly trounced the final act of the game as we had to brute force our way due to having lost all our context and momentum.

  1. The DLC for the original I found a bit too convoluted and obtuse to be "better" but it was certainly "more".
