Honestly though the proc gen story telling of it all is cool and serves to ingratiate all your little party members to you its inevitably hamstrung like most proc gen games by 1) lacking a coherent and compelling narrative to pull you along and 2) given enough time you see through all the tricks and the curtain is pulled back revealing a pretty boring and basic RPG/combat system. It's no substitute for a hand-crafted RPG with all the highs and lows the medium can serve up. And it's certainly no substitute for sitting round the table with your buds murder-hoboing in D&D.
It's funny I write all of this after coming out very positive back in 2022 when I played it. But as the years have passed I've only grown colder on the concept. Playing Wildermyth after playing D&D feels like playing Catan after you've played SimCity. Ah yes, how very emergent, placing these pre-planned cardboard cut-out story bits together. In D&D I can variously cajole or heckle the DM with a drink in hand. While here I can only silently cast my withering gaze at the glow of my monitor as the cold heart of the RNG machine inside decides whether something good or bad happens next. Ultimately I'm just not sure who it's for. I did chuckle when one of my heroes got turned into a furry. I guess that's something.
