Call of Duty

I can't tell you how amazing it felt to play a WWII shooter with iron sights back in 2003 especially after being a fiend for Battlefield 1942. No really, I can't tell you. Because after 20 years I've forgotten that experience. Not only that but all the things Call of Duty popularized are so firmly woven into the DNA of shooters that what you're left with replaying the OG is uhhh...an appearance by Jason Statham? Oh and really good sound design. I don't remember the last time I felt like I was being deafened in a game because a homie was going off on the MG42 next to me. But that's it. Sure there's a bit of drama and there's fun set pieces like the opening to the Russian campaign where a man reads off a speech to you on a boat as you watch all the other boats around you get sunk and your comrades who try and flee get shot like dogs for deserting. But the main entree on offer is waves and waves of generic enemies with zero feedback when you hit them. Don't even get me started on the car sections. I salute your service, Call of Duty, but I think it's time for an honorable discharge.
