Yeah I played Boomer cause I was pro.
It's weird to look at this dweeby Korean Worms-clone that I played as a teenager and realize how ahead of its time it was in a lot of ways. You had cosmetics that you unlocked by playing a shit ton and leveling up mixed with champion-based gameplay before MOBAs really became a thing.
Starting it up and just getting fucking curb-stomped by someone dressed up like the grim reaper cause all they did was play the game. Not understanding how on earth they could make such crazy accurate shots from across the map. Then hours and hours later being that person to someone else. Calling your shot from across the map like fuckin' Babe Ruth.
What a product of its time though. Every game had its own culture and Gunbound has its specific brand and specific lingo. I remember typing shit like "wasobe pro" and having no idea what it meant but that sending that shit meant I was Cool and Knew Stuff.
I got into other online stuff before and after that, WoW, Counter-Strike, FFXIV-- but nothing ever hit quite like GunBound. It'll always be a cherished memory I share with the 1000 other weirdos who mained this shit back in the day.
??? 2021
What is it about Korean MMOs where they all have dope music. Ragnarok Online, Gunbound, MapleStory, all dope soundtracks.
Anyway I must have sunk 100s and 100s of hours into this game. I loved how cute and cool it was. Loved how you had to invest a ton of time into each champ to learn how to play them. In a way it was a precursor to popularity of MOBAs later on. I remember being really into Armor originally and then switching to Boomer at some point because it was a "pro" champ. I remember the little memes in chat like "Wasobepro" that I legit could not understand but I knew, I just knew if I could say them after getting a dope shot that I'd be cool. Remember finding some cool people and hanging in the same for hours and hours chatting and playing.
What a fucking great game.
