SteamWorld Dig

Solid little metroidvania mixed with Minecraft. You're on a 2D map where you mine down going deeper and deeper. Along the way you mine out minerals and you can sell these and use the money to buy upgrades for your stats and abilities. It's a really great, tight game loop that had me pretty addicted. Enemies and combat are pretty basic but actually decently fun. Boss fights were reasonably challenging but not awful. And thankfully there were few puzzles.

And it's got some charm. It has it's own robot-western vibe which I guess the company leaned into and used for a bunch of other games afterwards.

Definitely worth the 5 hours or whatever I spent playing it.
